Mayor Lou Barletta has never left Hazelton, Pennsylvania for long. The grandson of Italian immigrants was born there and attended its public schools. He spent his time outside of class working at his parents' road-construction and heating-oil businesses. He later gave up his studies at nearby Bloomsburg State College to try out for the Cincinnati Reds. Barletta jokes that he came home because he "couldn't hit a curve." After his major-league disappointment, Barletta returned to work with his three brothers in the family business and married another native Hazletonian, Mary Grace Malloy. In 1984, they started a construction business of their own that later grew into the largest pavement-marking venture in the state.
